Spring Cleaning the Studio: Soldering Project Kits

Spring has definitely sprung here in north Texas. The bluebonnets are starting to let their little heads show in the fields along the highways, and the storms are bringing in some much needed water.  As I start to get the spring cleaning bug (believe it or not, I do get it from time to time), I'm starting to realize I have lots of kits from soldering classes I've taught in the past.

I'm not sure if anyone is interested, but I thought I'd list them here on my blog, just in case you are!

Soldered Banner Kit

The Soldered Banner Kit includes 10 pieces of handcut and sanded pennant glass, chain, copper tape and jump rings are $20 each. The pennant pieces measure 4" wide and are 6" long (from center of width to tip of point). Extra sets of glass (two pieces in a set) are $3/set. One kit will fit into a small flat rate priority box which is $6 to ship with delivery confirmation.

Soldered Crown Kit

The Soldered Crown Kit includes 8 vintage crystal bevels, 8 two-piece chandelier crystals, copper tape, round glass cabachon, & rhinestone chain.  Each kit is $50. One kit will fit into a small flat rate priority box which is $6 to ship with delivery confirmation.

 

Home Sweet Home Soldered House Kit

The Home Sweet Home Soldered House Kit includes 6 pieces of beveled glass, copper tape, and crystal pieces used in the photo above. It does not include the wood base, wooden feet, art inside, or tealight. The cost of this kit is $35 and one kit will fit into a small flat rate priority box which is $6 to ship with delivery confirmation.

Treasure Box Kit

The Treasure Box Kit includes 6 pieces of handcut and sanded glass, copper tape, jump rings, metal feet and glass crystal centerpiece. The cost of this kit is $40 and and one kit will fit into a small flat rate priority box which is $6 to ship with delivery confirmation.

Creating in Season & Santos Dolls

Last fall, after vending at the fall Glitter Market in Oklahoma City (yet another awesome Paper Crown production!!), I started getting the Santos itch.

You know, the itch to purchase a Santos of your very own or even sometimes the itch to create a Santos that means something more personal to you? That's the kind of itch I'm talking about. I know that Cindy gets them in stock from time to time, and from what I hear, they fly out the door just as soon as she can get them out of their shipping container!

I started thinking about different ways to create a Santos - one that could be personal for me . A few years ago, I took an awesome class from Colleen Moody over at one of the A Gilded Life events, and we created a gorgeous bird using paperclay. But, I wasn't feeling like paperclay was the way to go with my Santos. Then, I remembered a class from  "Art is You", creating Santos dolls using plaster and papermache. Combining several of the methods,I put my first doll together, and promptly set it aside. 

You do that too, right? 

Seriously, if I could just finish the mass of halfway made art and projects I have in my art studio, I'd have more space then I know what do with. No lie.

After scouring the internet for some more inspiration, visiting with a few local art shops, and taking Jeanne Oliver's online class, Creatively Made, I again visited with the Santos I had started months ago and finished her. While she isn't my favorite, she is me. She reminds me that I can pick up and start on my goals at any time - during the seasons they are meant to be worked on.

Since completing my first Santos, I've created several additional Santos dolls combining different methods from different artists. I loved scouring hobby shops looking for different media's to incorporate into my dolls creation. With that experience, I am presenting my first (and possibly only), Santos class at my favorite Oklahoma papercrafting store, Paper Crown, next weekend.

Rustic Santos Doll

Santos dolls were created as early as in the 17^thcentury.  Join me as I share how to create your very own Santos in the 20^th century!  Together, we’ll spend parts of two days carving, sculpting, smoothing painting, glittering, and staining as you create your very own simple but lovely Santos doll. Your doll will be approximately 18” tall! Please be sure to attend both days, otherwise your doll will not be completed.

All supplies will be provided except for the following list of supplies that each student will need to bring with them:

• Exacto Knife & Cutting Mat
• Scissors
• Apron (we are going to be getting messy!)
• Pencil
• Hot Glue Gun & Extension Cord
• Paint Brushes ( ½ ”, ¼”, and other small bristled brushes)
• Mod Podge (Glossy or Matte, whichever you prefer)
• I will have a variety of colors, but if you would like your Santos to have a specific skin tone or dress, please bring those paint colors with you.

Treasure Box: Memories to Remember

Next weekend, I get to make another trip to Oklahoma City. I really look forward to these trips, getting to visit with creative friends who I know "get" me, and just enjoying the area overall.  I'll be teaching two different classes over the weekend. One of the classes is a soldered box and I've named the course "Treasure Box".  The second class I'm teaching will be posted soon!

Last spring, as my friends were planning weddings and their children's graduation parties, I thought it would be really nice to have a special, handmade box for them to display their memories. I envisioned dried bridal bouquets with a special wedding photo or a graduate with their caps tassel and a special family photo. Way back then, I started working on cutting the glass (SO not my favorite thing to do. It's closer to the absolute bottom of the list.) and figuring out the size that I thought would be the most versatile. Almost a year later, I've soldered a few boxes for friends and am thrilled to share this class with my Paper Crown friends.

I think this really might be my favorite class yet!

Treasure Box: Memories to Remember

Memories are made to be remembered and seen forever. This special soldered Treasure Box was designed to dimensionally display your special memories, whether they be of your sweet family, weddings, or graduations. In this 2.5 hour class, we will construct this glass box, solder its seams for posterity, create a hinged lid (so that you can change out your memory display whenever the mood strikes), solder on decorative feet and a piece of sparkle to the front.

All supplies will be provided except for the following list that each student will need to bring with them:

• Soldering Station (tile/work space, soldering iron, stand, lead-free solder, flux, flux brush, clamps, bent nosed hemostats, & sharpie)
• Scissors
• Wet & Dry Adhesive
• Pencil
• Paper Trimmer
• Your favorite paper crafting “must-have’s”
