- Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant. (This will help me loose the end of my baby padding... right?)
- Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day. Buy a lock if you must. (I do this now and love the focus it gives me)
- Buy a TiVo (DVR), tape your late night shows and get more sleep. (We already have a DVR, and tape entirely too many shows. I need to get away from watching as much TV, but love the convienience of it!)
- When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement, "My purpose is to__________ today." (I love the idea of starting out my day with a specific goal or purpose!)
- Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy.
- Watch more movies, play more games and read more books than you did in 2008. (I read almost 150 books in 2008, and there weren't many movies I really wanted to see. I love to play games - not electronic ones though.)
- Make time to practice meditation and prayer. They provide us with daily fuel for our busy lives. (This is going to be a big one for me in 2009. I've let too many things which are important to me slide.)
- Spend more time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of 6. (Pretty sure I have this one covered plenty over)
- Dream more while you are awake.
- Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat fewer foods that are not manufactured in plants. (This one is also brilliant! I would love to get back to not eating sugar, and processed foods.)
- Drink plenty of water. (I'm going to work on cutting out the caffeine. With a baby with his schedule backwards, it's going to be REALLY hard though!)
- Try to make at least three people smile each day.
- Clear your clutter from your house, your car, your desk and let new and flowing energy into your life. (I love this one, but don't tell Steve. I'll work on clearing out my clutter without his input)
- Don't waste your precious energy on gossip, energy vampires, issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment. (This is fabulous! I'm going to also work on ignoring the comments and thoughts that are the same about me.)
- Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime. (No one is perfect and we all make mistakes. Accepting that we're all going through learning experiences is key. I definitely want to learn and change in 2009!)
- Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card. (This is how they eat in Europe - I miss it! YAY for bringing it back!)
- Smile and laugh more. It will keep the energy vampires away.
- Life isn't fair, but it's still good. (Amen - and I need to keep this in mind always!)
- Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
- Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
- You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
- Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
- Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
- Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, and wear the fancy underwear cause today IS special.
- No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
- Frame every so-called disaster with these words: "In five years, will this matter?" (This will be great for me to keep in mind for many situations especially with Steve.)
- Forgive everyone for everything. (Consider everyone's slate clean starting today.)
- What other people think of you is none of your business. (I worry entirely too much about what others think of me. I need to get away from it...)
- Time heals almost everything. Give time, time.
- However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
- Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch. (Enough overtime - now I'm moving into Family Time!)
- Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful. (Back to the clutter point earlier... I'll work on it.)
- Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
- The best is yet to come.
- No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up. (This will be especially important over the next 4-6 weeks as I get acclimated into being a mommy!)
- Do the right thing!
- Call your family often.
- Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements: "I am thankful for __________." and "Today I accomplished _________." (Love closing the day out with a positive reinforcement.)
- Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed. (I am VERY blessed and need to keep that in mind)
- Enjoy the ride. Remember that this is not Disney World and you certainly don't want a fast pass. You only have one ride through life so make the most of it and enjoy the ride.

After 35 years... still Lovebirds
Today is my parents 35th wedding anniversary! WOW... GO THEM! In today's society, it's a rare occurance to come across a couple who has been married for 10-20 years, let alone 35!My parents have always set the best(e) example for all of their children in regards to how to be married, (mostly) happy, and successful in a relationship.
I say mostly happy because, no relationship is 100% perfect and no one is perfect, so I'm absolutely positive there were times they were frustrated, angry, upset, and irritated with each other. However, they've always been respectful of each other, and have never been negative about each other to us - their children.
Amazing! Yes they are! And as I've often said, they are the awesome-est parents I could have ever have been blessed to have! They ROCK! Though I was the "black sheep" of our family for years because of choices I made and the different paths I've chosen in life they've never stopped loving me and being there for me. I've always danced to a different tune (i.e. wasn't into the same style of clothes my mother was, or into doing things the way that my parents would have preferred them being done). They've accepted me for who I am and for how I like to do things.
In the end, it's funny to realize I am more like my parents than I ever thought I would be. I love to cook (and be domestic) exactly like my mother, I love to read books about and help people like my father. I have a business mind like both of my parents, and often am thinking about "why" people do things, rather than just acceping people's actions for what they are - mostly just actions. My parents accept people for who they are - not for who they could or should be (well, for the most part - KWIM?)
I hope that my marraige will be as succcessful as my parents, and that our family will be as happy and accepting as my parents are.
Congratulations Mom and Dad! May you have the Best(e) coming years ever!

Scrappy Jessi's Holiday Cookie Swap: Eggnog Cookies

INGREDIENTS:
Scrappy Jessi's Annual Cookie Swap
Eggnog Bread
INGREDIENTS:
2 eggs
1 C. granulated sugar
1 C. eggnog
1/2 C. melted butter
2 t. Rum
1 t. vanilla extract
2 1/4 C. all-purpose flour
2 t. baking powder
1/2 t. salt
1/4 t. fresh ground nutmeg
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350° F. Grease and flour a Bundt pan. Beat eggs in a large bowl. Blend in sugar, eggnog, butter, rum and vanilla. Stir together flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg. Mix into eggnog mixture. Stir just enough to moisten dry ingredients. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 40 minutes or until done. Cool 10 minutes then remove bread from pan. Wrap tightly and store in refrigerator.
Eggnog Cookies
INGREDIENTS:
1 1/4 cups white sugar
3/4 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup eggnog
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 egg yolks
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Combine flour, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cream sugar and butter until light. Add eggnog, vanilla, and egg yolks; beat at medium speed with mixer until smooth. Add flour mixture and beat at low speed until just combined. Do not over mix. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto un-greased cookie sheet 1 inch apart. Sprinkle lightly with nutmeg. Bake 15 to 17 minutes until bottoms turn light brown.
NOTES:
Try making an eggnog frosting using powdered sugar, eggnog and a pinch of cinnamon. I dyed the frosting bright yellow to make them a bit more eggnoggy. If you do this, be sure to refrigerate the cookies as the milk may go bad!
Another fun addition is to add mini-chocolate chips to the dough. It’s a fun different twist!
Updates and Etsy
I have been working on a few things to list in my etsy store. I'm hoping to have them listed by Thursday or so. I was able to find a few more crowns to turn into charms - and just in time for Christmas too!

House Arrest... day 2.5
Seriously... it's so hard to be quiet while Steve is supposed to be sleeping. Not that I'm noisy mind you, but every noise I make I think may wake him up. How we're going to survive with his sleeping and a new baby I have NO idea. One day at a time I guess.
I'm heading back to work tommorrow and will make sure everything is lined up for when my "real" maternity leave starts. I guess this was a good trial to see what we've prepared for and what still needs to be done. That's how I'm selling it to myself anyway!
Full speed ahead to Silver Bella! WHOOO HOOOO!
House Arrest... day 1.5
I'm fine too. The specialists think the pain is mostly due to the endometriosis I've had for years. Endometriosis isn't just on your ovaries and female organs. It can develop other places too. Like on my intestines. And.. since every organ in my body has been moved to make room for the baby, everything is a new spot and is being stretched... there's lots of pain. yay.
There's nothing that can be done about the pain other than to take Tylenol... my new best friend. Seriously. I have a bottle of it upstairs, downstairs, in the car, and at my desk. No, I'm not overdosing and I am keeping VERY good track of when I take it. The specialist also said that drinking Diet Coke wouldn't be a cause and that I can resume drinking whatever my "normal" is. But... to be safe I'm keeping up with drinking water and very much limiting my soda intake.
It's raining Baby Showers!
Heather's Christmas Wish list
You asked for it, so now it's PUBLIC. Don't forget: Our son is due to arrive between the 15th and 27th of December. Waiting until the last minute isn't going to work this year. Here are a few items and suggestions for me for Christmas this year:
Big Gift Ideas:
- Canon Digital Rebel XSi with the 50mm IS lens (I already have a 18-55 lens that Jeff gave me.)
- Sanyo HiDefinition Digital Video Camera -Really, shouldn't this be a gift for YOU?
Small Gift Ideas:
- KitchenAid Silicone BeaterBlades - I'd need the one for a 5-qt. Tilt Mixer. (Really, you'll get more enjoyment out of this eating the bounty than I will using it)
- Nick and Nora Flannel Pajamas, Size Medium - Lucky you... I've already purchased them because I found them on sale.
- Subscription to Somerset Studio, Somerset Life, Handcrafted, Somerset Home, Somerset Workshop, Country Living, or Good Housekeeping
Stocking Stuffer Ideas:
- Socks
- Gift Card to Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Michaels, Joanns, Hobby Lobby, Wal-mart, Target, Dick Blick,
- Gift Certificate for a pedicure or a massage
- Chocolate
- Car Wash Coupons - or how about getting the car detailed??
Bella Bling Winner... and other Rambling...
Lots of thoughts are rumbling around in my head. Today's post won't be anything organized or otherwise prepared... except for the Bella Bling Blog Swag winner of course...
- Why is it, and perhaps it's just around the area where I live, that bicyclists think they don't need to stop at stop signs and that they are not held to the red traffic lights? Maybe it's just my irrational hormones, but good golly - stop at the freakin' signs. I asked Steve why it is (he was a bicyclist before his accident) and he said they should stop. But around here... they just don't.
- There must be something going on, similar to Y2K or something, which is causing folks to make a mad dash to our local grocers and stock up on everything and anything. I tried to go grocery shopping three different times this weekend, and the shelves at various local grocery stores were empty. I can't figure it out!
- The bean likes waking up at all hours of the night and keeping me up for the rest of the day. I think this is his way of preparing me of things to come. Great. We have about 8 weeks left and I'm already not getting my sleep. I think Benedryl and I are going to become fast friends for the next month or so (it's what my OB reccomended).
- We had awesome fish tacos for dinner tonight. It was a new recipe/concept that I gleaned from Nicole's new mother-in-law while we were in California for her wedding. And... they were by far easier to make than the fish taco's I normally make. Rock on. I'm sold... and everyone else was happy too. Sweet!
- I've started adding Quinoa to ground beef to up the nutritional value and stretch the grocery budget. No complaints so far, but whomever said you can't see it was blowing a load of malarkey out of his tush. It's obvious. It's a good thing college kids aren't picky - especially when it's free.
- I have to get moving on the nursery. I can't believe I still haven't gotten the boxes moved out or at least gone through. What am I going to do with all of my year books, stack dolls, and other German "keepers" if I don't want to display them? I guess it really is time to get a "Later-chest" (also known as a "Hope Chest") to store them all in.
- My lower extremities are holding water. It isn't pretty. If you saw me sitting at a table, you wouldn't know I was pregnant. Then... when I stand up it's a whole new world. My legs are trunky water tanks. Ugh!
- One of the boys who live across the street from us was hit by a car sometime in the last week - and we didn't know. I found out when I caught up on the minutes from our last city council meeting. How sad. I really need to get to know my neighbors better.
- My husband rocks. He cleaned the downstairs floors, bathroom, and kitchen for me Friday night. AND... he went to Wal-mart to pick up a few ingredients for a new chocolate chip cookie recipe (it rocked) too. He HATED Wal-Mart. It's equal to his Hell.
- I'm counting the days until my "planned" maternity leave, and yes, I'm planning to go back after the Bean arrives.
Okie Doke... now onto the reason why I'm sure most of you are reading.... to find out who the winner of the Bella Bling Blog Swag prize is....
And.... I asked Steve to choose a number between 1 and 35. He yelled the number 22 from the other room... so....

Thanks for posting the pic! You are going to have to list some of these in your etsy store too!!!xoxo

Gina G. You are the winner! Congratulations! I'll bring your charm with me to Silver Bella!
Thank you to everyone who entered! This was such fun! I may have to take a page out of Karla's book and do this every month! What a lovely idea!
Bella Bling...
I'm so ready for Silver Bella to be here! It's such fun for me, and I return home with so much creative energy - it makes Steve nervous! Granted, I do have a few things still to do to get ready (packing, gathering supplies, and finishing up swaps mostly), but it's all in progress and close to being finished. My Twinchies are created, my charms are designed, the Junkin' Journal pages are ready to ship, and my vintage collection packets are awaiting labels. My wand is in progress, and is coming along quite nicely! My moo cards are on order, and should arrive sometime within the next week. The boxes I'll ship everything to myself in are ready and waiting to be filled and delivered to the courier for delivery to my hotel room (it's definitely cheaper than paying to check in luggage!).Creating and Soldering....
Last year, I created Silver Bella 2007 charms for my roomies, and a few special Bella girl friends. This year, it went just a tidge farther, and I've licensed the logo and name from the fabulous Teresa, and am now selling special Silver Bella 2008 commemorative charms. Can you believe it? I've had such fun creating them, and getting the back design "just so". They're up and listed in my etsy store! YAY!
I have scads of creative projects to share with you! However, they'll have to wait until after the weekend. Steve's sister, Nicole, is marrying her beau so we're heading west to Northern California to join in the festivities.
On the baby front, things are well! I'm huge! I'll be uploading our sonogram photos to our family site, with the latest updates.
Make it a great day!

Our Dinner Menu - Week of July 27th
Q. How do you store your "freezer meals"? How long do they keep for? How do you heat/reheat/serve them?
A. One of the greatest investments we've made so far is our Food Saver. You can find them at Wal-Mart, Target, and I'm sure at many other super shopping centers. Before I load food into the bags, I label them with what I'm putting in and the date. I know that there's lots of talk for how long things will last in the freezer - but I haven't paid much attention, and haven't had any problems... yet. My personal rule is that if it's rock hard when it comes out and it looks good in the package (prior to thawing it), why not eat it? On average, I would say that our meals hang out in the freezer for 0-6 months. Roasts and ham bones for much longer. As far as thawing them, I usually put them into the fridge the morning of (as i'm getting ready to leave for work). Reheating varies. Frozen mashed potatoes do not reheat well in the microwave. But, they do in a saucepan on top of the stove over low heat. Rice reheats awesomely in the microwave. Spaghetti sauce and meatballs also do well in the microwave - but they also do very well stovetop.
Q. Will you share the recipes?
A. I will try and work on loading them to my recipe blog. You never know what you'll find over there. :)
Q. What do you do when guests come over? What will you do if we all show up?
A. We have a big group over EVERY Sunday. Steve's brother Thomas comes with his girlfriend, Sarah, and whomever they find who needs to eat a "good homecooked meal". Sometimes we invite some of our friends and their children to come too. Sometimes Steve's sister, Kim, comes too. Growing up, I learned to cook for a large group (rather, there were always lots of mouths to feed). So, it's difficult for me to cook for two people. We definitely have days of leftovers. We also have days where we just can't eat leftovers for another meal. Thus the beauty of the Food Saver! As far as people showing up out of the blue - bring it! That means YOU, Julie B. with no blog! :)
Q. With the cost of living going up, how do you afford all of the groceries you need?
A. Coming...
Onto this week's Menu... We were pretty successful last week. At least one night fell through, bu that's my fault.
Sunday - Beef Taco's & Corn Chile Chowder (at least three dinners into the freezer!)
Monday - Chicken Tikka Masala (from the freezer), sticky white rice & indian flat bread (naan)
Tuesday - Grilled pork chops (freezer), steamed vegi's, seasoned rice
Wednesday - Ravioli (freezer) w/ tomato sauce
Thursday - Swiss steak w/ egg noodles (3 freezer meals accomplished!)
Friday - Mini Pizzas! YUMMY!
Saturday - Breakfast - Breakfast casserole. Dinner - Meatloaf (freezer), baked potatos, honey wheat bread
5 Days...
Yep, it's almost here. The 4th book in Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series will be released to the world at midnight Saturday morning (really though, it's still Friday night - at least in my mind). I can't wait to have the book - and hopefully have the time to read it on Saturday.Converting to Mac...
Converting to a Mac from a PC is not easy. Heather taught me a few things and gave me a quick run down. I know that the Apple store has free classes (and I'm hoping to take them) but I am normally an immediate solution kind of girl. Waiting for classes is not my idea of immediate solution. Know what I mean.
I know some of you have gone through the same thing. Will you please share your tips for converting to a Mac from a PC? Please?
Thanks!
Schedules...
One of the things a friend recommended to me was setting a food menu at the beginning of the week, so that we have a schedule to follow for our meals all week long. Generally, we do pretty well at sticking to the schedule and not breaking it by eating out (talk about a budget buster!). One of the things I think will help keep me on our meal schedule is posting here - something about accountability. So... here's our meal schedule for the week!
Sunday - Swiss steak with egg noodles and wheat bread. Coconut creme pie for dessert.
Monday - Beef brisket & hash brown casserole (will add 2 freezer meals to our stash!)
Tuesday - Steak, baked potatoes, green salad.
Wednesday - Sandwiches (one of my all-time favorite meals lately!!)
Thursday - Jambalaya (will add 4-6 freezer meals to our stash!)
Friday - Chicken & cheese ravioli with tomato sauce and homemade Beste bread.
Saturday - Breakfast fritatta (sausage, potato and spinach) & Kung pao chicken with steamed rice. (the chicken is for dinner)
Hopefully, with this down and publically out there, we'll do even better at following it. Slowly, I'm getting life back together one schedule at a time.
